“Damn!” Starsky exclaimed. He had been digging in his jeans pocket and he spilled his change all over the floor of the car.
“What?” Hutch asked as he was getting in Starsky’s Ford Grand Torino. “Oh I just dropped all my change.” Starsky growled, disgusted with himself.
Hutch rolled his eyes, “You don’t want to miss out on that candy bar.”
Starsky bent over trying to feel for the change without much luck, “Can you give me a hand?”
“Are you kidding me, we got to get moving we are already late, Dobey is going to be on the warpath.” Hutch grumbled.
“Oh come on Hutch.”
Hutch sighed and bent over to help his partner, just as he did the glass in both the passenger side and driver’s side windows exploded sending a shower of glass over both men. Starsky howled with both anger and fear, he started to sit up. Hutch put his hand on his partner’s back holding him in place, “Stay down!” Hutch barked as he reached for his gun with his free hand.
Hutch held his breath; he could hear feet pounding away down the street then the sound of a car screeching away. He opened the car door and rolled out onto the sidewalk then squatted near the front of the car in case shots were fired again. He peered over the hood only to see the taillights of a car speeding away.
“What the hell?” Starsky had gotten out of the driver’s, side gun drawn. but he holstered it when he saw the danger was gone and was surveying the damage to his car.
Hutch stood up also holstering his gun, he looked at his partner, “You okay buddy?”
“Yeah I’m fine,” Starsky said, shaking glass out of his curly hair. “Are you okay?”
Hutch brushed glass from his clothing. “I think so.” He leaned back in the car and grabbed the mic to call the station.
Starsky bent over and picked up two shotgun shells lying in the street. He held them up, “Somebody isn’t playing around.”
Hutch found two more shells lying the in the grass, “They were nearly on top of us.”
Two squad cars pulled up, next to Starsky’s damaged car. “What happened?” Officer Dale Hammond asked as he got out of one of the police cars.
“Somebody tried to take us out this morning,” Starsky said holding up the shells for Dale to see.
“Either of you hurt?” Dale asked as he was joined by the officers.
“No,” Hutch said, “Starsk’s spare change saved us.”
